Club Team Relay
A new event graces the schedule at this year's Nationals. The team relay is an event that pits club against club in a multiple laps of the Stromlo XC course. The club team relay will be staged on Friday 25th, and be reminiscent of the team relay at the World Championships. The rules for the club team relay are:
(a) The team will comprise 1 Elite/Expert/Sport man, 1 Veteran/Master/Supermaster man, 1 Woman and 1 U19/U17 man.
(b) All members of the team must be registered members of the same club which is affiliated to MTBA. If the rider(s) are not MTBA members (ie a CA member) then other documentation to support this needs to be given.
(c) The team can start their riders in any order
(d) All team members must be also entered for another National Championship event
(d) The course will be 1 lap of the standard XCO course for each team member
(e) Team member change-over occurs by a physical contact at the start/finish area between team members
(f) The winner is the team who completes the 4 laps in the fastest time
Rav4 V6 Cross Country (XCO)
XCO is the most common form of mountain biking, and the standard for most riders. It generally means riding a looped course which may include climbs and descents across varied terrain. Circuits are usually around 6-8km, with elite level races covering around 40-50km.
Kluger Cross Country Short Course (XCC)
XCC is the sprint form of mountain biking providing an exciting spectacle with riders racing multiple laps around 800m in length. They ride for 15 or 20 minutes (depending on their category) and at the end or the specified time, the first bike over the finish line after three laps wins. Any rider who is lapped will be removed from the course.
Maxxis Downhill (DH)
DH racing is a time trial event. Riders start at regular intervals that can vary from upwards of 30 seconds and the rider with the fastest time wins. DH races are held on courses that contain steep, downhill terrain with natural and man-made obstacles and jumps. DH riders wear armour to protect themselves from the impact of falls. While not for the fainthearted, this provides plenty of fast and furious action and is always popular with spectators.
HiLux 4X
4X pits 4 riders on the same course from the starting gates to the finish. There can only be one winner per event. Riders must use all their skill to outride the other 3 riders. 4X is a relatively new discipline and has enjoyed strong growth in rider and spectators numbers over the last 12 months.
Observed Trials (OT)
Trials riding consists of hopping and jumping mountain bikes over natural and man-made obstacles. It can be performed either off-road or in an urban environment. It requires an excellent sense of balance. Setting any body part on the ground constitutes a penalty. Penalty points are added to riders' scores, leaving the rider with the lowest tally of points the winner.
