Race Rules
Participation
All participants need to be members of MTBA, CA, or have a day licence. MTBA day licences can be purchased at race registration for $15. All participants are asked to present their MTBA or CA licence or a receipt for the renewal of one of the two licences at race registration. Any participant who does not show their licence will be required to purchase a day licence for $15 before proceeding to race registration. Purchase of a day licence will provide insurance cover for participants for the entire event, including practice.
MTBA and club membership forms will be available at the registration desk. Membership of another club other than CORC can be arranged – see the registration staff about this.
A participant can only enter one race category per discipline. For example, a rider can only compete in XCO – Veteran or XCO – Elite, not both.
A Race Waiver (PDF) must be signed by all participants and submitted to race officials at race registration. Participants under the age of 18 must have their parent / guardian sign the Waiver prior to race registration.
Age Classification
All race categories that are age based will use 31 December 2008 as the age cut-off for the entire series. The appropriate age class will be determined by subtracting the rider's year of birth from 2008, ie. a rider born in 1991 will be (2008 - 1991 = 17) and therefore be ineligible to enter the U17 age category; having to enter the U19 age category.
Equipment Requirements
Every participant must wear a hard shell bicycle helmet that is fitted correctly and satisfies the current Australian Standard or equivalent during both racing. Helmets must be worn during official practice as well as during competition. All helmets must have a visible compliance sticker affixed to the helmet.
Helmet compliance is as noted in the policy on helmet standards compliance acceptance issued by MTBA from time to time. At the time of printing the list is:
AS/NZ 2063
ANSI Z90.4
Snell "B" or "N" series
ASTM F-1447
Canadian CAN/CSA-D113.2-M
U.S. CPSC standard for bicycle helmets
European CEN standard for bicycle helmets (EN1078)
Full-face helmets are compulsory (for DH) and body armour and other protective gear are strongly recommended for use in all downhill and mountain cross events.
Eye protection is also strongly recommended for all events.
Participant's footwear must be fully enclosed.
Participant's bicycle must be in good working order and have fully functional front and rear brakes. Handlebar ends must be plugged and not have any sharp ends. This also applies to any form of bar -ends.
Registration for Events
Riders must present their MTBA or CA licence, or the receipt showing purchase or renewal of their licence, at registration or purchase a MTBA day permit for $15.
Riders must register and attach their race number plate to their bike before they will be allowed to practice. This applies to all events.
If a rider pulls out of a race (DNF or Did Not Finish) he/she must notify the timing station. This is to ensure that all competitors are accounted for at the conclusion of the race.
General Racing Rules
Competitors must complete the entire race (or individual stage) on the same bicycle upon which they started the race / stage. NO WHEEL CHANGES ARE ALLOWED.
All repairs during an event must be performed by the competitor ONLY. No outside assistance is allowed from any other persons (including competitors). The rider is also not allowed to leave the field of play (the race course) to effect repairs. Any repairs undertaken to enable the rider to continue in the race must be performed with tools and equipment carried by the rider whilst racing.
Feed zones - Competitors may only receive food, drink and clean eyewear from assistants within designated feed zones. Food, drink, sponges, and glasses must be passed hand to hand. The person feeding may not touch the competitor or the competitor's bicycle. Only one feeder per competitor or per 3 team members is permitted in the feed zone.
Race numbers must be displayed on the handlebars of the bicycle. Altering, cutting, or placing of unauthorised sponsors' logos on numbers will result in a fine and / or disqualification. This season MTBA will be supplying number plates that can be kept by the participants.
All riders must display their race numbers if riding the course on the official practice day(s) or on race day(s). Downhill riders will not be allowed on the downhill transport unless they have the official number attached to their bicycle.
No competitors are to use any transport other than the official transport supplied by the race organisers for the official downhill practice or race day(s).
Riders must not use offensive or abusive language during the race, act in any unsporting manner, be disrespectful to the event volunteers / officials or ignore the race regulations.
Riders and supporters are reminded of their obligations to act responsibly at all times before, during and after the event.
Riders are not permitted to shortcut the course. The responsibility for following the official route lies with the rider. If you do not follow the official route you will be disqualified.
Riders are not permitted to willingly alter the course in any way without first consulting with the race officials. This includes moving rocks, logs, tape, or other natural obstacles.
Riders must act in a polite manner at all times and permit any faster rider to overtake without deliberately obstructing.
For all cross country races a rider's race ceases when the winner of their class finishes, i.e. riders complete their current lap. Lapped riders continue to ride and finish only when the first rider in their class has completed the event.
Feed Zone Etiquette
Riders' managers are permitted to do the following in a FEED ZONE:
Hand up food, drink, or eye wear in a feed zone. This is hand-to-hand only.
Riders' managers are NOT permitted to do any of the following in a Feed Zone:
No physical contact between riders and feeders is allowed. This will be considered as technical assistance. This includes a pat on the back, etc.
It is not permitted for a feeder to place water bottles on to the bike or hydration pack onto a rider. They must be handed to the rider. Food or other items must be handed to the rider. They may not be put into the riders mouth or the pockets on the riders shirt.
Sponges, wet towels, etc cannot be handed to the rider. If additional cooling is required the riders may be handed an open drink bottle so as to pour water over themselves. Feeders are not permitted to pour water over the rider.
Running in the feed zone is not permitted under any circumstances, so as to prevent collisions and interference with other feeders. Bring tools, bikes, spares, etc into the feed zones.
Riders may only be fed from either side of the feed zone area. However only one side must be chosen and traditionally this has been the right hand side. This allows those riders not wanting a stop to pass through the feed zone unimpeded. After feeding a rider the feeder must move clear of the feeding zone, this will allow plenty of room for other feeders.
Rider managers who will be feeders must be issued with a pass, 1 pass per 3 riders or part thereof, for access to the feed zone. This pass must be clearly displayed by the feeder. These will be distributed from registration.
Failure to comply with the above requirements may result in the feeder being removed from the feed zone and the rider may be penalised and / or fined.
